The Mets' ace, who took a 6.35 ERA to the mound, pitched well in a 5-0 win over the Padres, but admitted San Diego's lineup 'grinded me down' in an abbreviated five-inning outing.
Which brings the conversation to Monday’s showdown. It was as tough a test as Scherzer could’ve faced, considering Darvish had held the Mets to a .162 average over his career.
A prime example of the war Scherzer waged took place in that final inning. It was actually his final batter – No. 9 hitter Austin Nola, who struck out, but not before five foul balls with a full count. The at-bat lasted 11 pitches.. “I know what I’m capable of when I locate,” is what Scherzer said. “I think I can continue to get better and keep grinding and find that mid-season form. Everyone’s trying to do that, it’s just who can do it faster.”
Remember, Scherzer was smoked for seven runs in 4.2 innings in Game One of last year’s WC Series by these same Padres. And prior to that, while the Mets were getting swept by the Braves in a make-or-break series that decided the East, Scherzer allowed four runs in 5.2 innings. It doesn’t take much detective work to find the culprit. It’s the pitch clock, not birth certificates, that are hobbling pitchers.
