Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One charts the worst week 2 drop of the entire franchise, but there are several reasons it's not a flop.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One has taken a steep plunge during its second weekend at the box office. The movie is the seventh outing for Tom Cruise's iconic superspy Ethan Hunt, who was introduced in Brian De Palma's original 1996 hit Mission: Impossible, adapted from the television series of the same name.
Per Deadline, the Mission: Impossible 7 box office is projected to make $21 million at the domestic box office by the end of its second weekend in theaters. This would be a 62 percent drop from its opening weekend gross of $54.6 million. Not only that, it is by a wide margin the worst week 2 drop for the entire franchise, which ranges from the high of Ghost Protocol's 131.
Mission: Impossible 7 is Doing Just Fine Although its week 2 drop seems drastic, there are a few good reasons that Dead Reckoning Part One had such a steep decline this weekend. The first is the fact that it logged the best 5-day opening of the franchise yet. Even though the drop is technically steeper, it had farther to fall and its second-weekend gross is still reasonably competitive with some earlier titles in the franchise.
However, the main reason that this decline took place was the fact that this weekend saw the release of both Barbie and Oppenheimer, known collectively as Barbenheimer. The well-publicized box office battle between the two movies hasn't left much room for any other movies in the marketplace to thrive. In fact, the Barbie box office just claimed the highest opening day gross of 2023, which would be difficult for any movie to compete with, even a Tom Cruise blockbuster.
As the Summer progresses, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One will likely show strong staying power even if it never hits No. 1 again. Although upcoming releases like Haunted Mansion, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and The Meg 2 all have a shot at No. 1, their releases are more spread out and will allow the three aforementioned blockbuster tentpoles to keep raking in box office.
