Occupational therapy is the missing piece in alleviating the mental health crisis | Opinion
, according to the Centers for Disease Control. With 47,646 deaths by suicide in the U.S. in 2021, there is a clear mental health crisis affecting our loved ones, and occupational therapy practitioners are the missing piece of the puzzle. As an occupational therapist, I work with individuals who fall within the most susceptible age ranges and experience the most complex medical conditions. In my daily work, I help my patients develop, recover and maintain the skills needed for daily living.
Believe it or not, the occupational therapy profession has deep roots in mental health care that span. When the Soldiers Rehabilitation Act of 1918 was signed, occupational therapy practitioners were key members of the health care system. They evaluated the occupational performance of soldiers adversely affected by combat stress and implemented interventions that aimed to enhance their physical and mental well-being., signed by President John F. Kennedy.
I have spent many hours and days teaching adolescents and young adults coping skills, time management and safety skills. When I worked in an outpatient behavioral health clinic, I taught many groups, including one on assertive communication. This group allowed individuals with bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia to learn strategies for improved self-esteem and manage stressful situations that come up in everyday life.
There are many policies in the works that support the mission to further expand our ability to work with individuals who have a mental health challenge, such as the Occupational Therapy Mental Health Parity Act, which is a bipartisan bill introduced in 2022 that will expand access to occupational therapy services for mental and behavioral health disorders under Medicare and Medicaid.
