Opinion: Drop underground parking from East Village Green plan [Opinion]
Why am I not surprised. It turns out, however, that more than half of the $61 million for new facilities is for the 182-space underground parking garage. At $191,000 per space, this is about 3 times the average cost per space of other underground garages.
Again, why am I not surprised. Here is a thought. Cancel the underground garage and bring the Park cost closer to the original budget. The city has been pushing increased housing density without any parking to encourage people to walk, bike, or take public transit instead of using their cars. No better way of “practicing what you preach” than by eliminating 182 parking places in the heart of high-density, mass-transit-rich downtown. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
