The significance of knowing our history as queer people is that the past helps us to make sense of the present and who we are as a community. We should expect, and welcome, that people with different lived experiences don’t always see the past the same way. We all use history to make meaning of our sense of identity and the role that our lives and actions play in our collective history. It’s important to recognize the difference between memory and history. Memory is something that we own.
