With a goal in mind to walk again, a Pennsylvania man who was critically injured is now inspiring others at a Philly rehab center and beyond., it all started when Jamier Malik Howard was shot six times after walking out of a bar in the Logan section of Philadelphia.
“I was lured, robbed, shot and left for dead,” Howard said to the news outlet during a rehab session at a Magee’s Rehabilitation center in South Philadelphia. The 36-year-old was hospitalized for months and then transferred to a nursing home facility, where doctors diagnosed Howard as an incomplete quadriplegic. After a couple setbacks, he was finally able to begin with Magee Rehabilitation Center,A recording artist and designer who racked up Instagram followers from his music posts, Howard is now gaining new followers inspired by his desire to walk again.
Albert Vernacchio, an occupational therapist at Magee who has worked with Howard, talked to the news outlet about the obstacles ahead. “He’s an incomplete cervical spinal cord injury so he has quadriparesis,” Vernacchio said. “He achieved more movement, he’s able to get his arm up to do a little bit of feeding, very minimal but stages of upper body dressing.”“First my fingers started twitching, my left finger then my toes started moving. The biggest milestone definitely is me being able to move my hand,” Howard said., the rehab center has seen an increase in gunshot victims because of the rise in violence that plagues the city.
