Staff Reports The Dothan Eagle coverage area had a pretty good Friday in the opening round of the high school state playoffs.Adding in G.W. Long’s sweep on Thursday and the area has had 10 teams advance to next week’s second round. A 11th team could advance on Saturday as Houston Academy plays a decisive third game at Oakman, the only series that split on Friday.

In game two, Providence scored seven runs in the top of the first and eventually won it in five innings. The Raiders led 4-3 after scoring two in the sixth inning. The Wildcats scored once on an error to tie it and had the bases loaded with only one out. Pitcher Adam Boyd got a grounder back to him and forced a runner at the plate for the second out. Boyd then got a pop out to prevent Oakman from earning the game-winning run.

In the opener, Porter Nelson had three hits, including a game-ending two-run homer in the sixth inning, and drove in four runs and Cash Harrell also had three hits for Opp. Nelson Hall had a hit and two RBI, while Grady Patterson and Baylor Turman had a hit and RBI each. New Brockton 10-6, Beulah 4-5: New Brockton scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to break a tie and earn a 6-5 win in the second game to finish off a sweep. The Gamecocks won the opener 10-4.

Green had a two-run single in the fourth inning, a three-run double in the fifth that broke a 2-2 tie and added an RBI on a sacrifice bunt in the seventh. The Purple Cats had only three hits. Easton Kilpatrick had a run-scoring single in the second and Ian Senn drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to score Jessie Pelham, who drew a walk to start the inning.The opener, which was delayed by rain midway, was tied at 4-4 going to the ninth when Ariton scored three runs in the top half. The Purple Cats gave up a run in the bottom half on a lead-off homer but held on for the win.

In game two, Williams had two hits and two runs batted in and Colon and Christian Morris had a hit and RBI. Morris’ hit was double.Pike Liberal Arts 5-11, JU Blacksher 1-0: Pike Liberal Arts swept J.U. Blacksher, winning 5-1 and 11-0.In the opener, Kade Brookins pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits and a run, while striking out three.

Klete Meadows and Austyn Miller both had three hits with Meadows driving in a run. Ethan Simmons had two hits with a run batted in and Braylon Morris and Eli Jones both had a hit and RBI.
