Opening statements began Monday in the federal hate crime trial for the three men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery.
Prosecutors said Monday that the three white men who killed Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, made “decisions about Ahmaud” based on the “color of his skin.”
Bernstein said McMichael had responded to the friend by saying, “It would have been cooler if it blew that fucking n****r’s head off.” The case is bigger than the offensive language the defendants used, but it does provide context about Travis McMichael’s thinking when he pulled the trigger. At the federal trial, the government is expected to contend that the McMichaels and Bryan chased and killed Arbery because he was Black, thereby violating his civil rights. TThe trial could last up to 12 days, according to U.S. District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood.

Jury to be seated for hate crimes trial in Arbery killingThe federal judge presiding over the hate crimes trial of three white men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery said she would seat a jury Monday after a week spent asking potential jurors what they already know about the Black man’s death as well as their views on racism in America. U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood said she's ready to start the trial once a pool of 64 people deemed qualified to serve as impartial jurors is narrowed to a panel of 12 plus four alternates on Monday. It will be the second time the port city of Brunswick, on the Georgia coast south of Savannah, has held a trial in Arbery's killing since November, when the same three defendants were convicted of murder in a Georgia state court.
