Mathew Bates hits three-run shot in first to get Longhorns started
Games aren’t often won in the first inning, but there was most definitely a momentum change in the opening frame of Tuesday’s Division III fourth-round playoff game between No. 8-seeded Mar Vista and top-seeded Rancho Buena Vista.
In the bottom of the inning, Mathew Bates teed off on a fastball, driving it over the left-field fence for a three-run homer. “The boys have been awesome,” said English, the star of RBV’s 2002 state championship team. “It has been someone different every game stepping up.Michael Solari went 6 1/3 innings for RBV . He allowed one run on five hits, walked four and struck out seven.
“I pitched a lot last season and my arm wasn’t 100 percent when the season started,” Solari said. “But it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.Bates’ bash was only his second of the season, but he said he knew it was gone as soon as he hit it.
