The first giraffe in San Antonio was part of a traveling circus that stopped here in 1901....
did not get one until 1938 and that they were very rare in U.S. zoos at that time. That got me wondering about San Antonio, because I remember seeing them as a child in the mid-1940s.Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the tall beauties first were brought to European zoos in the early 19th century and came later to U.S. zoos.
A few years later, giraffes were part of the “big new zoo of curious animals” advertised by the Great Floto Shows in the Light, March 26, 1905. A “mammoth menagerie” with more than 100 exotic creatures was one of the main attractions of the circus coming to town that week. Of all of them, “the most delicate animal is the giraffe.”
While the craggy outcroppings of the park’s former quarry were incorporated into some of the habitats, many animals were still behind bars in the early decades. Four tons of salvaged steel from the old Lockwood National Bank building were donated to the city “for use in constructing additional animal cages for the Brackenridge Park zoo,” according to the San Antonio Express, May 24, 1923.
So were there really giraffes in the theater? “A New York dealer … wrote the president, Krams-Beck, offering to rent an artificial giraffe” for $25 plus shipping.
