The new deal includes additional disciplinary options for dealing with misconduct, but activists say it falls short of the reform they were seeking.
The San Marcos City Council voted to approve a new agreement with the San Marcos Police Officers Association on Tuesday despite opposition from some in the community. The agreement approved Tuesday by the council extends the length of time an officer can be investigated for misconduct from 180 days to 360 days. It also now requires the San Marcos Police Department to consider previous reprimands and suspensions when officers are up for promotions.
Council Member Alyssa Garza was the lone dissenting vote, echoing the concerns of activists who said residents didn't have enough of a voice in the process. “No one is completely happy with this,” Gleason said. “There's a lot of good things in here that are moving the needle.”
