Agriculture Minister David Marit has written to Ottawa to activate a disaster recovery program for livestock producers.
McLellan said lack of rainfall and unseasonably warm temperatures in 2023 have particularly hurt producers in western and southern portions of the province, and conditions in the rest of Saskatchewan are deteriorating rapidly.Once a province makes a request under the framework, provincial and federal officials assess what’s needed to help producers with extraordinary costs caused by a disaster.
Along with drought, McLellan said inflation in the cost of inputs and transportation are cutting into producers’ profit margins. He still believes in the long-term future of the cattle business, he said, noting demand for beef has not slowed down.
