"The Little Mermaid" trailer, which released this week, has young Black girls excited about singer Halle Bailey, who stars as mermaid Ariel.
Parents have been posting videos on social media of their daughters' joy over seeing a Disney character who looks like them."The Little Mermaid" trailer features Bailey as Ariel swimming under the sea and singing,"Part of Your World." But critics, particularly a white Christian Facebook group, are slamming the new Disney film trailer for casting a Black woman in the lead role. They claim Ariel, a fictional character, is historically white and should stay that way.This original Disney animated film released in 1989 featured Ariel as a white, red-haired young mermaid.
A Facebook group called"Christians Against Little Mermaid " recently launched. But that group has spawned counter Facebook groups,"Christians Against Christians Against Little Mermaid" and"Humans Against Christians against Little Mermaid." Bailey is best known for being half of the musical sister duo Chloe x Halle, which has earned five Grammy nominations.
