The new effort will aim to link fatal drug deaths to their dealers, a controversial tactic in the battle to rein in opioids
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Friday the creation of a new task force in San Francisco that will attempt to build homicide cases against suspected drug dealers.
“This task force is fighting for those affected by this crisis — for victims and loved ones who deserve peace,” Newsom said in a statement. “Working together, we will continue providing treatment and resources to help those struggling with substance use — and secure justice for families who have lost loved ones.”
Fair and Just Prosecution, a network of reform-minded prosecutors, released a report in July 2022 that warned drug-induced homicide prosecutions are “inherently problematic.” It argued that the threat of homicide charges does not dissuade drug dealers or users, and that such charges are rarely brought against high-level drug traffickers.

Fentanyl is as much as 50 times stronger than heroin, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
