The Storybook Personalities program, for which former Mayor Libby Schaaf once performed, is returning to the amusement park.
The Storybook Personalities were the brainchild of Burton Weber, who was special events coordinator for the city of Oakland and a big supporter of Fairyland in its early days. He was the first to realize that Fairyland had a big problem that nobody had anticipated: It was too much fun.
Over time, the program became more and more about the theatrical performances, though, especially after Aesop’s Playhouse, a gorgeous, jewel-like miniamphitheater, was built, and the other functions gradually fell into disuse. However, now that the park has reopened after the pandemic, it’s time to look at everything with fresh eyes, and Executive Director Kymberly Miller has made the bold decision to go back to the roots.
You’ll never know where they’ll show up. Sometimes they’ll be on the tiny Emerald Stage, which was their original home before Aesop’s was built. Sometimes they might pop up anywhere inside the park where you least expect it, like a mini flash mob. The first production, which will debut in June, is a swashbuckling pirate drama called “Treasure!” that will be performed — where else? — on the deck and in the rigging of the big Pirate Ship set.
My favorite Fairyland memory is the time I saw a Storybook Personality gently painting a star on a little girl’s cheek. The look of adoration, amazement and gratitude on that little girl’s face as she gazed up at her hero — there’s no other word for it — was something I’ll never forget.
