As temperatures drop, an outreach minister in Tacoma is focused on getting resources to those currently experiencing homelessness.
TACOMA, Wash. — Once a week, Rodney Richardson fills up his truck and drives around the streets of Tacoma, handing out supplies to the city’s homeless community through his outreach ministry,Whether it’s food, clothes, or toiletries, Rodney wants to be sure he and his volunteers are ready when they see someone in need, so he makes sure everyone has supplies in their cars.
“When you see a homeless person, boom! Jump out, pull it out of your back seat, hand it to them on the way out of the driveway, and then you’ve done your part,” he said .is warning residents in the South Sound to prepare for freezing temperatures over the next few days, and a freeze warning will go into effect later Friday night.“In the summertime I try to give out more water. That’s all I can do, I can’t give out fans and stuff like that,” he said.
But Rodney said he understands the need because he still remembers being a homeless runaway in Portland, walking the streets without shoes or socks during Christmas. He said that experience gave him the fire he needed to start his outreach nine years ago, and it will take more than cold weather to stop him from helping others.
“This is my life, and this is what makes me happy and when I’m out on the street, I feel like I’m in my purpose, and when you’re in your purpose, there’s something about that.”
