Texans bench Davis Mills, to start Kyle Allen at QB against Dolphins
Texans coach Lovie Smith confirmed Friday that the franchise will start Kyle Allen against the Dolphins on Sunday. The official announcement arrives two days after Allen usurped regular starter Davis Mills by taking first-team snaps during practice, and the change makes official a move that has been expected.
Mills and his persistent struggles have been well-documented. The 2021 third-round pick has thrown for more interceptions than touchdowns in his last eight starts, his 78.1 passer rating ranks 34th among all qualified quarterbacks, and his 59.8 completion percentage on Houston’s cumulative opening three drives this season has contributed to the offense’s slow starts in games.
The Texans attempted to mask their benching of Mills this week. Smith and general manager Nick Caserio both delayed declaring a starter in the name of securing a competitive advantage, although Smith signaled a change Monday by saying the team would “do some things differently.” Allen could generate more yardage due to his tendency to push the ball further downfield. The four-year veteran started in 12 games for the Panthers in 2019, and his average depth of target , albeit in a different offensive system, was a full yard more than what Mills has averaged this season .
