The Texas Attorney General’s office is suing Facebook for allegedly violating state law when the social media platform captured and used biometric information from photos or videos uploaded to the site without users’ consent.

Facebook's Meta logo sign is seen at the company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., on, Oct. 28, 2021.

The lawsuit, against Facebook parent company Meta Platforms, Inc., asserts that even people who weren’t on Facebook but appeared in photos on the site were harmed by the practice. The lawsuit claims that Facebook violated the Texas Capture or Use of Biometric Identifier Act, and the Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, which carry penalties of $25,000 and $10,000, respectively, for each violation, according to the filing.
