Tighter restrictions announced as the country braces for the coronavirus’ new omicron variant
The government will also require mask-wearing in theaters and other indoor venues, following an earlier move November 30 making masks compulsory in stores and on public transportation.
Johnson said the new rules are designed to “buy ourselves the time” to get Covid-19 vaccine booster doses to more U.K. residents amid the looming threat of omicron, which he warned is spreading rapidly and could cause hospitalizations to surge. Some 81.1% of U.K. residents ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 37% have received a booster dose, according to“We can’t yet assume that omicron is less severe than previous variants,” Johnson said at a Wednesday afternoon
. “While the picture may get better, and I sincerely hope that it will, we know that the remorseless logic of exponential growth could lead to a big rise in hospitalizations and therefore, sadly, in deaths.”
