UH’s Matthew Golden, who showed potential as a freshman in 2022, is part of a group that will have to replace the highly productive Nathaniel “Tank” Dell.Third in a position-by-position series looking at the 2023 Houston Cougars after spring workouts.Matthew Golden, sophomore; Joseph Manjack IV, sophomore; Samuel Brown, sophomore; Peyton Sawyer, senior; C.J. Nelson, sophomore; Anthony Gangi, junior; Cash Walker, sophomore; Dylan Caddle, redshirt freshman; Dalton Carnes, redshirt freshman.

Joshua Cobbs , Stephon Johnson , Ja’koby Banks , Mikal Harrison-Pilot , Jonah Wilson , Ja’Ryan Wallace .Imagine a spectacular Las Vegas Strip show packing up after a multi-year run. That’s life for the Cougars this season following. Dell, an All-America wide receiver, was the focal point of the UH offense the past season with a combined 199 catches for 2,727 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Matthew Golden and Samuel Brown are the top two returners, along with a healthy Joseph Manjack IV, who was limited to five games with a hand injury before a return for the Independence Bowl win against Louisiana.and will assume a bigger role in his sophomore season. Transfers Joshua Cobbs and Stephon Johnson are expected to play significant roles this season. Cobbs spent the last three seasons at Wyoming, leading the team last season with 35 catches for 407 yards and two touchdowns.

There will be plenty of intrigue once preseason camp begins in August as the Cougars welcome true freshmen Mikhail Harrison-Pilot and Jonah Wilson , two of the Cougars’ highest-rated signees in the recruiting service era, according to 247Sports. Another top freshman, Ja’Koby Banks of Fort Bend Marshall, was a mid-year enrollee and participated in spring practice.
