The Transportation Interim Committee met at the Utah State Capitol to discuss efforts to deal with road rage.

The Transportation Interim Committee met Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at the Utah State Capitol to discuss efforts to draft a bill to address road rage. Committee chair, Sen. Wayne Harper , called the issue “a priority” for the committee. But lawmakers are still working on what exactly a legislative solution will look like.Salm said he hopes Utah lawmakers will do something.

“Obviously, what happened to us was devastating,” Salm said, “but if we can prevent that from happening to other people, that’d be wonderful.” Rep. Paul Cutler is one of the lawmakers leading the charge on this issue. Asked if he intends to have a road rage bill ready for next session – which begins in January – he said “absolutely.”

“Our intent is to go after those very serious cases where somebody is trying to assault someone else with a motor vehicle,” Cutler said, “where they brandish a weapon, they threaten and intimidate people because of an incident on a roadway.”But Sen. Jake Anderegg questioned whether laws like this are effective.

“They look good on paper, but in practice, I just don’t see that they’re actually deterring anything,” said Anderegg,Cutler said there's still work to do, while Salm hopes all of it will lead to action by state lawmakers.
