Conference tourney 'a reset' for Toreros, all-conference senior Marcellus Earlington says; club to play Portland on Thursday in Las Vegas
The University of San Diego’s Marcellus Earlington was named second-team All West Coast Conference on Wednesday, an honor the burly fifth-year senior guard/forward earned after putting together a strong all-around season.
The Toreros were swept by Portland in two meetings, finished the regular season on a five-game losing skid, have dropped seven of their last eight and are 2-5 in games decided by four points or less.Case in point: on Feb. 16 at Jenny Craig Pavilion, the Toreros trailed No. 17 Saint Mary’s by 23 early in the second half but held the Gaels scoreless for the game’s final 7:05. They nearly stormed all the way back before losing 62-59.
“If you look at the conference schedule, we’ve had some stretches where we’ve played well,” coach Steve Lavin said.
