We recommend in the race for Dallas City Council, District 5 | Opinion
Dallas Morning News EditorialPleasant Grove and other southeast Dallas voters will recognize the names on the ballot for City Council District 5. It’s almost the same lineup as two years ago, minus a fourth candidate. Incumbent Jaime Resendez, an attorney, faces former Park Board members Yolanda Faye Williams and Terrance Perkins.
Williams, 54, a paralegal and marketing director, raises important criticisms about the need for greater accountability at City Hall and the lack of clarity around equity policies. But we think voters should reelect Resendez, who offers the clearest and most compelling path to make the Pleasant Grove area a more prosperous part of the city.
Williams and Resendez have differing philosophies on affordable housing. Williams supports the construction of high-rises and amenities like coffee shops to draw millennials to District 5. She has been critical of Resendez’s resistance to more federally subsidized low-income apartments in southeast Dallas.
Resendez is right in his reluctance to embrace more tax-credit apartments in an area of Dallas where they are already concentrated. Other parts of Dallas must do more to contribute to solving the city’s housing problem by taking on more quality apartments for low-income renters. Resendez’s vision is to promote the construction of more single-family houses for homeownership in District 5.
