'I ended up losing a few friends ever so quietly. No epic blowout screaming matches — just [a] gentle dissolving.'
Looking back, it's easy to see how I did it.I started out with the best intentions. During my maternity leave, I'd call to discuss the TV show I'd successfully binged. I'd include them on family emails whereby I sent a healthy stream of cute baby photos. I'd text them hilarious discoveries about finally having big boobs.
Meanwhile, those mom friends I barely knew had quickly become a powerful support network — one that was able to successfully carry on a lively 3 a.m. text conversation about lazy latches or a middle-of-the-afternoon debate over which carrier to get once we outgrew the Solly wrap. I ended up losing a few friends ever so quietly. No epic blowout screaming matches — just the gentle dissolving that transpires when you lose proximityAs the months passed and I returned to having a semblance of a fully functioning life, the ghosting continued. Sure, the fact that I'd moved halfway across the country from most of my nonparent friends didn't help, but I imagine that even if they'd been down the block, I wouldn't have included them.
When I finally realized that my prebaby life didn't exist — I was literally living an entirely different life in a different city with different people — the damage had been done. I ended up losing a few friends ever so quietly. No epic blowout screaming matches — just the gentle dissolving that transpires when you lose proximityFor the friendships that did survive, I was beyond grateful.

Gwyneth Paltrow Suddenly Has Very Standard Beliefs About Why People Get SickThere’s a story I think about a lot, told by Douglas Rushkoff, one of the only good futurists. They didn’t actually want to talk about technology, Rushkoff found. They wanted to talk about how they would survive the climate crisis or a viral outbreak. They wanted to know how they would escape.\n

Why Are Netflix Teens All Dressed Like Aging Hipsters?Though there are rare exceptions children are generally not allowed to shape media in their own image. Instead, entertainment intended for teens has always been based on approximations of the clothing, music, and lifestyles of stylish youths as filtered through the imaginations of the adults in control of the narrative, which teens then attempt to emulate before adults come along and appropriate these trends in some new, slightly different iteration, creating a media snake eating its own tail.
