Dozens of spectators spread across the Arkansas State University campus to view the total solar eclipse during Howl at the Sun. An outreach event hosted by the Arkansas Bioscience Institute .
The ABI partnered with the Memphis Museum of Science and History and the University of Memphis Department of Physics and Materials Science for the event. With local schools not in session today, the department invited some of their youngest clients for an afternoon full of fun, topped off by viewing the once-in-a-generation event.
Samiei was one of a handful that drove over an hour to view roughly two and a half minutes of darkness.“Look!! Diamond Ring,” said Shea Harris, outreach coordinator at the ABI. While young Katherine Johnson, who also drove from Memphis along with her sisters and parents to witness the total solar eclipse, called it “creepy at first” when the temperature dropped, and it became dark at 1:55 p.m.
