The driver charged in the Renton crash that killed a woman and three children last week was warned to slowdown by police months before the deadly incident.
A photo from body camera video shows Chase Daniel Jones, then 17, at the scene of a car crash in Kent in May 2023. The first crash happened in May 2023 on Southeast 204th Street in Kent. Body camera video from the incident obtained by KOMO News shows Jones admitted to a police officer that he was speeding at the time of the crash.A Kent Police Department officer asked him to estimate his speed at the time of the May crash, and Jones responded, “40 or 50,” the video shows.
"He told me he was speeding down the street ... that dude was hauling," a KPD officer is heard saying in the video. The other driver involved in the crash told police he was turning into the road when Jones' Tahoe approached at high speed. “By the time I got out there, there was just a pair of lights, and they were going so fast, I tried to put it in reverse and get backwards, but by the time I got in reverse to go backwards it was already gone," the driver told police.“It’s a mistake, mistakes happen. Lessons need to be learned, as long as you learn it," the officer told Jones in May 2023.
Jones was hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center after the crash but has now been booked in the King County jail on a $1 million bail.
